Although most of the California Originals cookie jars are in the affordable price range for collectors, there are a few that are highly sought after and can command hundreds of dollars.
The fully painted/colored Snow White could be considered one of the most sought-after and has sold for over $1000. at times. Snow White also comes in a white antiqued glaze, which is not quite as valuable. Other jars that come in the antique white glazed include the Pinocchio jar, Wonder Woman, and Dumbo (shown below).
Just because a jar might be considered a Holy Grail of a company, doesn’t mean that it is also very expensive. A few examples would be these jars that are very hard-to-find, collectors love them, but they don’t sell for hundreds of dollars. Today’s prices could range from $75 – $200, but all bets are off if there is a bidding war.
The Penguin is very difficult to find and I know one collector that searched for it for years, definitely in the hard-to-find category and even reaching Grail status.
California Original jars are typically not reproduced, but there have been several hobby molds of the Sesame Street jars. The one exception for a reproduction was Count Dracula produced by Hawkeye Collectibles in 1993. This is the authentic jar.
Shown is from an image from an article I wrote for an Antiques and Collectibles magazine circa 2007 comparing the differences. |
