Question:
Could you tell me how i should care, wash, and store my cookie jar?

Red says:
We HAND wash all jars and pottery with liquid "JOY" dish washing soap, which we have found to be the best. DO NOT rub the gold trim very hard, as that will remove it. As for storing ?? This jar needs to be where you can show it off. If you do pack it away DO NOT put newspaper next to the jar, as the ink print sometimes transfers to the jar. Wrap first in plain white paper, an old T-shirt or anything that will not transfer color or ink.

Question:
The cookie jar I have in question looks like the "American Bisque Chick with Tam" that I found online while trying to research mine. However, my chick cookie jar is off white in color with green, red, blue and yellow polka dots that vary in size (4) on the front of the base and (4) on the back of the base, (3) small red dots down the front (to look as buttons). The chicks fingernails are painted red and the feet area has red paint on them with (3) vertical brush marks above each foot. On the lid the chick's hat is trimmed in red with (3) poka dots--1 small color of blue, 1 medium color yellow, and 1 large color green. The top tassle is red. Bottom is marked usa 126A. My mom purchased this cookie jar from a yard sale approximately 20 years ago. Any information is much appreciated.

Red says:
Your jar is American Bisque "Chick with Tam". They made this jar in several different colors and with INDENTED DOTS like yours. Is the number 126A or ( 129-A )?? Book Value $150. - 195. in MINT condition.

Question:
I have recently purchased an American Bisque Lamb cookie jar for my mother and I am wondering about its value. She used to have the same one in the 1970s. This jar and lid are in mint condition with no chips or faded color. The shape is a white lamb, standing on its hind legs. The face seems to be a girl lamb. It has a yellow hat/lid. The collar is brown and the inside of the ears are pink. I'm just trying to determine its value.

Red says:
How about a Boy Lamb (sitting down) with a Flower Blossom Hat. He has a heavy collar with a bell. Book Value runs from a low $90. to a high of $350. Today's prices around $150. - $175 in MINT condition.

Question:
I have a cow cookie jar with DESIGN PATENT #137120 APCO on bottom, I'm thinking it's McCoy but not sure. The cow has horns across the top of her head, red inside her ears, red mouth, black eyebrows and lashes, shows a collar, then like trousers button on. Please tell me what you know about this piece, thank you very much. JoAnn

Red says:
Your jar is NOT McCoy. Its a Cow or "BULL" as they called it. The "APCO" stands for "American Pottery Company" of Byesville & Marietta, Ohio. Your jar was made in early 40s, most were cold painted. (paint will wash off ) Book Value $60. - 80. in MINT condition.

Question:
I have a cookie jar of a pink toy soldier -it is Cardinal, the ID# looks like 312. Any idea of it's value?

Red says:
This jar was made two ways. With a Bank Head and just a plain head. This jar was Book Value at around $500. - 600. in the mid 90s. But the price today is more like $300. - 400 in MINT condition with BANK head. $250. - 340. without the bank. I've recently seen a Bank Head sell at auction last weekend for $100. It was a little rough around coin slot. Someone getting their money out a little rough.

Question:
I have a tree stump cookie jar. It has a spirit on the lid. It says cookies on the front. The side says Treasure Craft California. There are a few numbers between Craft and California.

Red says:
This is a guess, If what you are calling a "SPIRIT" on the lid is a PIG finial? It is called a " Pig on Stump " marked ( #425 Treasure Craft 1964 Copyright Ca. ) Value $40 - 45.
Pictured on page 367 The Wonderful World of Cookie Jars.

Question:
I have a Disney Steamboat Willie cookie jar #1031 with the certificate of auth. and original stamped shipping box. How much is it worth?

Red says:
I know VERY LITTLE about all of the newer jars. The only thing I can find about a "Steamboat Willie" Mickey Mouse is in one book (Cookie Jar Express) Under the Manufacturer (Treasure Craft ) list no markings. If this is the jar? Book Value $200. - 250. No jar is worth any more than you can get for it in any given time. Remember that books are only a guide. NO BOOK EVER BOUGHT A JAR.

Question:
What is the highest price to the best of your knowledge that one of the Hull "Little Red Riding Hood" cookie jars have sold for? I will be selling one soon and want to know what a serious collector might pay?

Red says:
All Little Red Riding Hood pieces including jars were hand decorated. There are NO TWO exactly alike. The factors used in determine price is the number of decals, type of decals, where the decals are located, open or closed Basket and condition of the gold trim. Now we get into condition of Pottery! Are there any chips, dings or hairlines? Color of Pottery? Do the top and bottom have the same color? You will never get the price you want for sentimental value. I have seen Hull/Regal jars sell for as much as $1500. at a live auction a few years back. That same jar sold at live auction last April for a little over $500. Times have changed in last few years. I know I haven't told you what you wanted to hear, but since I do not know which jar you have, can't give you price of any kind!

Question:
I own a little red riding hood cookie jar. I believe is a Hull, I have found pictures of it on line the only difference is mine has the patent #135882 USA instead of 135889 like all of them are showing. Can you help me figure out who and when this jar was made. My great grandmother gave it to me when I was a child at I finally have pulled it out to put it in my China Cabinet. Thank-you

Red says:
Thanks for asking. This just happens to be something I know a little about. " Little Red Riding Hood." If you will look real close at the last number 2 you will be able to transform it into a 9. Sometimes as the molds were used, it became very hard to read the markings. The more a mold was used it burned off part of the fine details. The first pieces out of any mold are a lot crisper in detail all over the piece. The patent #135,889 was issued June 29, 1943 to Louise Elizabeth Bauer. She assigned her rights to patent design #135889 to "The A.E. Hull Pottery Company" They produced and distributed "Little Red Riding Hood" 1943 to 1957. Hope this helps.

Question:
I have a very old little red riding hood cookie jar, it is nothing like what is online. Approximately 12" tall, it has a light blue dress with Little Red Riding Hood written on the front bottom. The top part is the face and hood and basket, but again VERY different from the others. Can you help?

Red says:
You have one of the VERY first Little Red Riding Hood jars to be produced. It was made by "The Cronin China Company, of Minerva, Ohio" for Pottery Guild of America. Your jar is referred to as "Pottery Guild, Little Red Riding Hood " made in late 30s and early 40s. The jar has a book value of $135. - 195.

Question:
We bought this jar about 5 years ago we love it but know nothing about it. It is shaped like a tea Pot with handle, golden yellow in color. The jar is about 12" in height without the lid. The lid is a small teapot on a dome. One side of the pot has the word cookies written on it the other side has brown and gold flowers. The bottom has Los Angeles Potteries, with double circle 66, also xx90. Calif. USA. I hope you can help!

Red says:
Sorry, I CAN NOT find anything on the Tea Pot. It has the correct markings for L. A. Pottery. That is one isn't documented in any of my reference and value guides. If it had of been a high dollar jar, they would be REPRODUCING it.

Question:
I bought a cookie jar at a yard sale this summer that is lamb chop from Sheri Lewis. I know nothing about collecting or how I should care for this darling cookie jar. If someone could give me some tips I would really appreciate it.

Red says:
Your "Lamb Chop" was made in Taiwan, for Benjamin & Medwin, Inc. a New York City based importer & distributor. "Lamb Chop" licensed by Shari Lewis. Marked with a paper label. Books Value from $35.00 to 95.00. This isn't a heavy jar, so hand wash VERY carefully, DO NOT put in dishwasher. This isn't a jar to store cookies in if small hands are the ones getting cookies to out to eat. You have a jar to start a COLLECTION. Join The American Cookie Jar Association!

Question:
After a death in the family, we took possession of the family cookie jar. The cookie jar is a McCoy Indian Head cookie jar. The marks on the bottom of the jar are "McCoy" and underneath that is "USA". From what I understand the cookie jar is supposed to have color on the feathers and head dress. The jar we have is only brown. The details are still on the jar, but has no other color. Does this mean it is most likely a reproduction or a fake? Or was there a "version" of the jar like this?

Red says:
In all likelihood you have the real thing. If the jar is over 12 years old, you do have the real thing! McCoy, to save in production costs, added what is known as "COLD PAINT" that was not put under a glaze or clear coat. It saved in time and cost by not having to put the jar through another firing process. The cold paint would wash off, after a few cleanings or by just by soaking the jar for a little while. If you could send a picture I could tell if real or fake.

Question:
I have a McCoy cookie jar in the shape of a yellowish/peachy colored apple. It has two repaired cracks (don't go all the way through to the inside) and 3 repaired chips on the body of the jar. I understand it was produced between 1950-64. Can you give me an idea of its value? You have what is called The Blush Apple. Book Value $45. - 65 in MINT CONDITION.

Question:
I have an Abingdon hippopotamus cookie jar. White with yellow flower on center of front and each side and back. Also trimmed with red/turquoise and tan vines/leaves. Has arms and feet/w toes painted. Lid design color matches body. Does have a crack on top edge where the lid sits, but has never broke through. Has indentation on top edge for lid to fit in. Bottom has ABINGDON/with U.S.A. under it and is boxed in with a blue line. Also has the number 549 put on before baking. Also looks like two ones (11) on there. I would appreciate any information and or value (if any) there might be on my hippopotamus.

Red says:
Yes the jars has value. Your Hippo was made prior to 1950. In 1950 Abingdon sold their cookie jar molds to Pidgeon Vitreous China Co., they continued making jars with the numbers on them, but left off the Blue ink stamp Abingdon. The Book Value is $275 low book to $600 high book IN MINT CONDITION. Without having hands on can't give a price. You mentioned a hairline crack, take that into consideration on price. Abingdon made four different decorations on this jar.

Question:
I have a Brayton Mammy cookie jar. It's red with a white apron and a blue/yellow/white striped shirt. It also has zig-zag hem on the apron. The skin is very dark. It appears to be old, and is in great condition. On the bottom of the jar it is marked BRAYTON CALIF, USA. Do you have any idea what it's worth?

Red says:
If it is NOT a reproduction jar, book values vary from $650 to $1,400. in MINT condition. Value depends on condition of pottery and the cold paint normally on the head.

Question:
I have three glass jars painted inside yellow, red and white with the same fruit and flower design painted on the outside with gold leaves. The jars are 9 3/4 inches tall with lids.

Red says:
The jars a VERY common. I do not know the manufacturer. They are listed in "The Complete Cookie Jar Book" by Mike Schneider. Value around $15.

Question:
I am not really a collector, but I do have a Twin Winton "Bambi" cookie jar that I am curious about. The jar is Bambi lying in front of a tree stump with a squirrel on top of the trunk. My mother bought it for her mother about 50 years or so ago. It is in excellent condition. Can you give me a value range on this item?

Red says:
If you have two cookie jars you are a collector, looking for the third! The designer of your jar, "DON WINTON" was the guest speaker at the American Cookie Jar Association in Oklahoma City this past October. Your jar was listed in the catalog sheets from the company in 1963, 64, 66, 67, 68, 69, 71, 72, & 1974. This jar was made in all seven standard colors, Wood, Pineapple, Ivory, Orange, Gray, Red, and Avocado.
Now for your question. Book value $150 - 195. in MINT or as manufactured condition. Sentimental Value PRICELESS.

Question:
I don't collect cookie jars but I am looking to purchase a particular style. It's a cookie jar that is seen on the set of the "Wings" TV series of the 90's. I was just curious if you knew where I could buy this cookie jar. The label says:
SECRET RECIPE-HOMEMADE COOKIES-A DELICIOUS BLEND OF THE FINEST NATURAL INGREDIENTS-SINCE 1898-GOLDEN AWARD 1900-BLUE RIBBON 1903,----1984 SJL PRODUCTS,INC.

Red says:
Sorry, I do not know anything about this jar and can not find in any books. There is not a lot of information on this type of glass jar with wooden lids. This was probably put out as a one time promotion for the brand of cookies.

Question:
I found a cookie, it is santa sitting at his desk and it says on the front of the cookie jar ACCOUNTING DEPT. S.Clause MGR. It has a list started with a few names on it. He is using a quill pen with the ink bottle on top. The feather quill pen is in his hand, with a candle on the left side of the desk top. On the left side there is a clip board hanging on the side. Santa is sitting a a barrel. On the bottom of this cookie jar it says ALBERTA'S then circle with a c in it and then the number 58. On the right side of the cookie jar Santa's belt hangs there are two bells for Santa to ring, one is for the reindeer, the other is for a helicopter. On the barrel that Santa is sitting on it says CHRISTMAS CANDY. I was wondering if you had any information on this cookie jar for I have never seen one like this before.

Red says:
Your jar is listed in several books. Alberta Ceramics or Alberta Mold Co. Molds furnished by Alberta were used for hobby and home ceramics. As a result, the quality of paint and detail will widely vary, from very amateur to very well done. The price range in book VALUE $45. - 125.

Question:
The cookie jar club website lists the Shawnee Puss N' Boots as one of many jars reproduced or being a fraud on Ebay. Does this specific jar include the patent information on the bottom? Have spotted one that looks too clean and painted differently from any other I have viewed, but does include patent info and presented in identical position of authentic jars.

Red says:
Yes, the PUSS N BOOTS is being reproduced in all variations of marks. Some are marked "Patented / Puss - N - Boots / U.S.A." on 3 lines & some just " U.S.A. " Some just "Puss N Boots U.S.A." same as originals. The originals are 10 1/4 ' & 10 1/2' in height. Here is a web site for Shawnee Pottery that shows a little of the reproductions. Shawnee Pottery. Click on NOT SHAWNEE and look at around 16 pages of eBay sellers and fakes.

Red says:
What you have is "Patented MUGGSY U.S.A " not "Painted Muggly". This jar was made by The Shawnee Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. They closed their doors in 1962. Your is a plain "Muggsy", they also made him with Gold Trim & Decals. Yes, he is VERY collectable, with a book value of $400. - 600. in MINT condition. The jar has the work "CELEBRATE" on the bottom and a crown logo. Can you tell me anything about it? Is it of value? It is in good condition with only very minor flecks of paint missing.

Red says:
The manufacturer of your jar is unknown. "Let me explain." A distributor named LEEDS of Chicago, Il. 1944 to 1954 . They were licensed by Walt Disney Productions. Red says:
In Westfall Book #1 it is called "Cookies with Nut on Lid" Value $32.00 - 36.00. In Cookie Jar Express it is called "Cookies on Round Jar, Nut Finial" Value $20.00 - 30.00. This style of jar was made by at least 3 companies. The most collectible was an import jar by NAPCO. Value from low $40.00 to $125.00 high. Hope this helps.

Question:
I have a cookie jar that I believe is a Napco "Cookies" cookie jar. It has 4 raised cookies and a "walnut" handle, as well as 18 raised cookies on the jar itself. It is is excellent condition with the exception of crazing from age. I am very curious about its value and would appreciate any help you can offer! Thank you.

Red says:
This is a VERY collectible jar. This jar was made by at least 3 different companies. Napco is valued in a wide price range in books.from a low of $35.00 to a high of $195.00. I do know if you want to sell the lid only their are several people wanting it. The Napco jar is 10 inches high & most were marked with a paper label only.

Question:
I own 2 Napcoware cookie jars. One has gingerbread boys and the other has cookies. Both have lids with nuts. I need new lids. One is broken into many pieces, the other has a hairline crack from many years of little hands in the jar. These belonged to both grandmothers of mine, so they are very important to me. Any suggestions?

Red says:
The lids can be professionally restored. I am not familiar with a Napco jar with " Gingerbread Boys "?? We have a member of the American Cookie Jar Assn. Bill Kasting "The Matchmaker" at Cookie Jar Matchmaker he has at least 3 people looking for the lid with walnut finial on jar with cookies. These jars were made in Japan and are VERY light weight & got broken easily. Jim Keffer of Blue Springs, MO. is a Master Restorer. His phone number is 816 - 229 - 2745 and email is gimmi-a-break@webtv.net. You may have someone in your area that does restoration. Be prepared to pay, as I do not know of any that are cheap.

Question:
I am trying to identify a mammy cookie jar, cold paint- green blouse, yellow shirt, holding a coffee tray. I believe it might be a Luzianne Coffee promotional item. The bottom is marked USA in cursive uppercase letters, no maker name. The cold paint is coming off, however there is more than 50% of the color still present. Can you direct me to the best place to research this item or can you tell me if my estimation is correct? Thanks so much!

Red says:
Sounds as if you are correct in saying it is "Luzianne Mammy". But keep in mind this was one of the very first jars REPRODUCED. Also they used the ORIGINAL MOLD. If you know the history of this particular jar for the last 20 years. OK, if not BEWARE. Not saying it is a reproduction. But the first ones they reproduced were good. Hope this helps.

Question:
I saw a cookie jar recently that appears to be a Luzianne Mammy. She is signed McCoy, USA, her dress is white with a sliced watermelon on her apron, carrying a red tray with a silver coffee/teapot on it. Turban/kerchief is red and her skirt says "Luzianne Coffee and Tea". Is this an original or reproduction? And if a reproduction, are they still being made today? What would be the worth for either?

Red says:
Sorry, You saw a REPRODUCTION jar. Can be purchased for $12.50. McCoy NEVER made a Luzianne Mammy. There are several books out that show this jar is being reproduced. Always buy from someone that you know will give your money back if a jar is a REPRODUCTION. Otherwise LEAVE IT ALONE. And yes they will still make more! Hope this helps.

Question:
I recently purchased a Cumberland Ware cookie jar at an estate auction. All items in the auction were 1950's or earlier. The cookie jar is marked with the CW USA mark and is Friar Tuck. On the front he is holding a scroll that says Thou Shall Not Steal (Cookies) The Jar is approximately 12" tall and 8 " wide in mint condition.

Red says:

Question:
Would you please give me the value of my American Bisque Lady Pig Cookie Jar. She is about 11 and 1/2"tall, yellow body, light bluish and pinkish apron and pink and green flowers on top of her head. She is in very, very good condition with no cracks or chips.

Question:
I recently purchased a Hippopotamus cookie jar at a thrift store and was curious as to its past, pedigree, etc...It is a smiling, full-size Hippo standing on all four feet. It looks as though it was created in the sixties or seventies, judging by the flowers carved into its body and hideous split-pea green coloring. Does this sound familiar at all? There are no significant markings on the jar, though I think I may have spotted a backwards CALIF on the underside.

Red says:
Sounds like you have a HIPPO by DORANNE of CALIF. The jar should be marked " California USA 18 ". They made several animals Turtle, Elephant, Deer, Lion all with flowers on them and their beautiful colors. They went out of business in 1961. These jars were made in the early 50s. Book values $35. - 60. in MINT condition.

Question:
I have a tan cookie jar with a little brown on the edges. It is a Noah's Ark cookie jar. It is in excellent condition. It is about 9 inches tall. On the top of the lid is a pair of owls. Around the bottom of the jar,in the front, are other pairs of animals, hippos on right side, deer on the left and giraffes in the middle. It was purchased with S AND H Green stamps in 1980.If you knowanything about this particular jar, will you please let me know?

Red says:
Look on the lid it should be marked "TREASURE CRAFT copyright made in U.S.A." Their are several versions of NOAH'S ARK made. But Treasure Craft is the only one with Owl's on the roof. Book value it at $45. - 60. in MINT condition.

Question:
I have a cookie jar that was given to me by my mother. I remember she got it when I was a kid in the early to mid 1960's...probably with S & H green stamps. The cookie jar is a brown bear with a white face that has pink blush on its cheeks. The bear is wearing a green tie somewhat like a bowtie, except it droops down. The bear is also wearing a green billed flat cap. The top of the cap is removable to place cookies in the jar. The only markings on the jar is USA on the back bottom of the jar.

Red says:
You have a jar by American Bisque called Bear with Hat or Bear with Visor Cap & Bow, was made in the 50s. Book value is $65. - 90. and another $160. - 195. This jar was made in several different color combinations.

Question:
I have a Clay Art cookie jar of three African American singers, I think that it is called Crooners. I can't find it on the web, but once caught a glimpse of it on a collectables show on cable and heard it was worth quite a bit. Do you know where I could locate more information on cookie jar collectables?

Red says:
Don't spend your money until you get it. Your jar is called "SOUL TONES" ( blacks singing trio ) This jar isn't a high dollar jar. Book value is $40. - 50., about issue price. Very few Clay Art jars escalate in price. Main reason is they produce as long as people buy, and not limited to a certain number of jars. So 1,000 are made of each one. KILLING the price for resale.
