Where Do We Send This Workman's Paycheck?

by Sandi Phillips

I try to stay away from eBay, where my appetite for cookie jars can get my checkbook balance in the red in a hurry! But, (there's always a but, right??) several months ago I was cruising around eBay and found a jar I had never seen. I felt an instant bonding. It was like: I HAVE TO HAVE THIS JAR! This is why my hubby is so n-n-n-nervous when I browse eBay!

Since my fingers and brain are not connected, my fingers quickly placed a bid. I didn't check the auction more than 10,000 times a day until it closed either, just in case you think I have NO willpower!! When the auction ended, the reserve had not been met, so I contacted the seller. He named his price and I named mine and we met pretty much in the middle. The jar had some damage, but dang does he ever have character!

Soon the jar arrived. (I never even flagged down the UPS truck on the days I was waiting for the jar to arrive, to say ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T HAVE A PACKAGE FOR ME after he passed my house. That's how much willpower I have!) I was as thrilled with him in person as I had been seeing him on eBay. He's a keeper! (Why, you are asking yourself is she telling me all this?) That's simple. I would sure appreciate any information that you may have on the origins of this wonderful cookie jar. So far I haven't been able to uncover any information about him.

There are three pictures I have taken of the jar and will post with this article, so you can have a good look at him. These things I can tell you, the jar has no marking on the glazed bottom, or anywhere else. He is 11" tall and a medium/heavy weight. Airbrushing was one of the methods used to paint the jar. The jar is very detailed and, even glazed inside, as you can see by studying the pictures. If you look closely you will note the pattern so carefully incised into the workman's hat. In studying him I decided that he might be a bartender, or a tradesman on his lunch hour or break. His clothing seems to suggest the 40's or 50's.

In your collection do you have a jar that reminds you of my jar and you don't know anything about it? Maybe this company or individual made other jars. If you have information concerning this workingman, please post a note on the bulletin board or you can contact me at: books25@home.com. As I receive information, it will made available on the ACJA website.

I am sure that many of you have jars that you have questions about or maybe a jar that's special to you. Please feel free to write a story and send it along with any pictures to me. The ACJA welcomes your input.

Thanks for your help. Happy hunting as you add to your collection through eBay or whatever your source may be!
