Do You Know Me?
by Raymond Davis jarmanray@aol.com I am a cookie jar that most every one knows. I was made by a great pottery co. named McCoy. My mate has the same last name. Some of you collectors even have a cookie jar of me with one of my eyes closed. It has been determined that I have two different lids and my mate has three. I am some times confused with a dough boy ( I think you know who I mean ). My mates name is Betty at least that is what it says on the box she comes in ,but most of you call her Betsy. I think by now you know the name of the above cookie jar is Bobby Baker. All of us who collect cookie jars feel sure we know just about all there is to know about the Bobby Baker jar. That is why I am doing this piece. About three years ago I purchased a Bobby Baker jar that no one seems to know much about. I have asked many people who know a lot about McCoy jars and they don’t have the answers I am looking for. As far as I know now, I have the only one like it. I know you are asking what could be different about a Bobby Baker jar? First he is about one half inch taller and a half inch larger around his head. NOTE: Click on any picture in this article to see a larger version!
The Bobby Baker I am trying to learn more about is on the right. As you can see he is a little taller. I hope you can also tell his color is different than other Bobby Baker jars. He is a cream color and not a bright white like the other jars . Most of the McCoy cookie jars have a mark something like this.
The Bobby Baker that I have has a McCoy mark that looks like this. It also has the words oven proof under this mark.
After purchasing this jar I could not find this mark in any of the reference books that I have. I now have three cookie jars with this same mark. There may be more that I don’t know about. My McCoy Clyde the Dog and the McCoy Green Pepper have this mark. I also have the Green Pepper jar with the standard mark and it is a much smaller jar. They both have the same number 157.
As you can see by the above pictures there is a lot of differences in the two green peppers. My Clyde the Dog mark does not show up well enough to take a picture of. Here are pictures of my Bobby Baker jars. The last one is a one of a kind. I was at a local flea market with my five year old grandson when I found this jar. He was all white no paint on him . The man selling him knew that I collected jars and offered him to me for $ 8.00.My grandson spoke up and said, “ Buy it Papa and I will paint him for you.” Now you know that I have one priceless cookie jar.
I have the regular and low hat Bobby Baker plus the Cream colored one. I am not sure if there are other colors of the Winking Bobby Bakers or not?. Do any of you have a different colored one? Here is what I would like to know. Does anyone else have a Bobby Baker with the oven proof mark and is it cream colored like mine? Does anyone know where and when he was made? Are there other cookie jars besides Clyde the Dog and the Green Pepper with this type of McCoy mark? Check your McCoy jars you may have a different one. If you know the answers to any or all of the above questions, please email me at jarmanray@aol.com. Thanks!
